SUMMARY:St Brigid Cross Making WorkShop
DESCRIPTION:I \nIHC is delighted to welcome Scian Hayes\, a talented local artist (scianfollyhayes.com)\, who will guide us in the traditional making of St Brigid’s Crosses\, a practice deeply rooted in Irish history and folklore. For centuries\, families across Ireland gathered on the eve of St Brigid’s Day to weave crosses from rushes or straw. It was believed that St Brigid would visit homes that night\, blessing them for the year ahead. Hanging the cross above the doorway symbolized protection from harm\, along with hopes for health\, abundance\, and renewal as spring approached. This workshop honors that tradition by bringing people together to share stories\, learn the history of St Brigid and her legacy\, and take part in a ritual that has been passed down through generations. We will run two workshops: the 1st workshop @ 2pm and 2nd workshop @ 2.45 pm. All materials will be provided and you are welcome to bring ribbon\, yarn\, or flexible plant materials of personal significance to incorporate into your cross. Participants will create a cross to bring home and hang on St Brigid’s Eve\, continuing a timeless Irish custom. Tea\, coffee and snacks will be provided. DESCRIPTION:Annual Memorial Day Mass to be held in St Patrick’s Cemetery on May 26th at 10.30 am with Fr Martin Bourke acting as the celebrant this year. The Mass\, will be an outdoor mass and will happen no matter the weather. A small number of seats are provided but please feel free to bring a folding chair to ensure you have a place to sit. Come prepared for the weather. St. Patrick Cemetery was founded by Irish immigrants in 1880 and undoubtedly many Irish Famine immigrants are buried there. The cemetery possibly may be the location that has the most genuine Irish ties in the Seattle area! DESCRIPTION:Seattle Folklore Society presents Irish Fiddler Kevin Burke. Kevin has been at the forefront of traditional music since the 1970’s. A founding member of several renowned and influential groups (Open House\, Patrick Street\, The Celtic Fiddle Festival) Kevin has nonetheless retained his love for solo fiddle music – the “naked fiddle” as he himself sometimes puts it. DESCRIPTION:A rare reunion concert by two of the world’s best-known traditional Irish musicians. James Kelly\, fiddle\, and Dáithí Sproule\, guitar and vocals. Natives of Dublin and Derry\, James and Dáithí recorded a series of legendary albums of traditional music in the 1980s with accordionist Paddy O’Brien.
